Media Studies at Dunraven focuses on giving students the skills, knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm in order to achieve highly in the subject, both inside and outside of the classroom. We want students to understand the impact that media products have on their lives. We want to encourage critical thinking and we want to encourage the use of media literacy in a student's communication. We also want to give all Dunraven media students the practical and technical skills useful for self expression and for use in the world of work.

In year 7, learners are introduced to key codes and conventions of a range of media products. They also develop key creative and technical skills, using current software and key techniques. They are encouraged to look at the media products they engage with through a more informed lens.
Assessment:
Students will produce a mini portfolio of their practical work over each rotation and receive a holistic grade on how well they can apply the codes and conventions of different media products to their own work. This will include an audience profile video, original logo, film poster, magazine cover and podcast.

At KS4, we offer a BTEC in Creative Media Production (Tech Award), a vocational course, which consists of three components:
Component 1: Exploring Media Products (internally assessed)
Component 2:Developing Digital Media Production Skills (internally assessed)
Component 3:Create a Media Product in Response to a Brief (externally assessed)
By the end of the course, learners will have developed knowledge and understanding of:
- Key media concepts (media language, representation, audience and industry)
- Narrative theory) Propp’s Key theories (such as Hall’s Reception theory, Neale’s Genre theory and
- How to apply these to creative briefs by planning and producing their own media products.
- How to review and evaluate their own ideas.

At KS5, we offer an A level in Media Studies, which consists of three components:
Component 1: Media Products, Industries and Audiences (examination - 35% of the qualification)
Component 2:Media Forms and Products in Depth (examination - 35% of the qualification)
Component 3: Cross-Media Production (non exam assessment - 30% of the qualification)
Learners study a range of media forms in terms of a theoretical framework which consists of media language, representation, media industries and audiences. The following forms are studied in depth through applying all areas of the framework: newspapers, magazines, television, online, social and participatory media. Advertising and marketing, film, music video, radio and video games are studied in relation to selected areas of the framework.

- Evaluating and challenging theoretical perspectives.

- Knowledge of how audiences are targeted through media texts and that audiences receive and read media texts in a range of ways.
