EYFS

In EYFS, pupils develop basic movement patterns, learn to follow simple rules and instructions and start to understand a healthy, active lifestyle. This is initially achieved through story-based lessons, which subsequently progress into lessons centring around ball-skills, fundamental movements and athletics. Outside of lessons, children are provided with opportunities to develop their fundamental movements and ball skills during free flow activities using a range of resources.

They engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations. They master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and coordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending perform dances using simple movement patterns.

They develop a range of skills in these sports and develop their understanding of rules and tactics. They also begin weekly swimming lessons in Year 4.

BTEC

BTECs are vocationally related qualifications, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. Additionally, they are popular and effective because they engage learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace. Students will study the following four units, covering the knowledge and skills required for the sports sector:

  • Fitness for sport and exercise

  • Practical sports performance

  • Applying the principles of personal training

  • Leading sports activities.

Where will this take our students?

The subject-specific knowledge and skills delivered, which they develop through studying this qualification, will give them a strong foundation for academic or vocational study at level 3, such as a BTEC Level 3 National in Sport, an A level in Physical Education, or an apprenticeship.
