Economics

“Every short statement about economics is misleading”

Alfred Marshall

Nevertheless, definitions are a useful place to begin. Economics is a social science directed at the satisfaction of needs and wants through the allocation of scarce resources which have alternative uses.

Our department aims to help students develop knowledge and skills which will enable them to make well informed decisions based on the information available to them.  Economics helps our students to gain the  knowledge and expertise to be able to choose what is best for themselves as well as for society as a whole.

KS5

Economics is a subject that equips students with the ability to make meaningful decisions about how to allocate resources in the most effective way. In macroeconomics, students evaluate the most effective strategies to tackle the market failures arising from the consumption of demerit goods. Traditional economics principles are studied in conjunction with behaviour economics, a discipline that explores how psychological aspects of human behaviour can complement economic policies. The role of global monopolies, such as Amazon, are also evaluated, giving students the opportunity to observe how academic knowledge is linked directly to real events. In macroeconomics, students explore the national and international economy and its impact on different stakeholders. Concepts such as inflation, interest rate and quantitative easing are analysed in their contribution to achieve government major macroeconomic objectives.  Recent debates around international trade and globalisation are also discussed.  Are global supply chains detrimental to national economies? Is free trade the best way to achieve economic development? What is economic development?

Our approach to teaching is holistic; this means that we aim to equip students with the academic knowledge that will make them successful, but we also aim to provide them with the transferable skills that will make them flexible and adaptable to an ever changing work environment. Our links with external organisations give students the opportunity to develop their employability skills as well as the opportunity to pursue different career paths. Being an active member of an inclusive and diverse community is also part of our motto. Our pastoral work across the sixth form endeavours to ensure equality of opportunity and that every individual’s needs are met.
